Resolved Question: How do I deal with an out-of-control compost pile?

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Greetings! Looking for a composter? Well, here is a question that will help answer a common query. Good luck!

Hi!

I’m looking for some advice on how to deal with my big mess of a compost pile.

We just moved into a house in southeast PA and the local trash service does not collect yard waste, so we inherited two large compost bins full of yard waste. The bins are at least a few years old, so one would think that by now there might be some gorgeous, yummy compost in there somewhere, but no…all we have is a whole lot of very slowly decaying woody trimmings, piles of weeds (many with seed heads…yikes!), and tons of grass clippings that take up at least half of one bin. From what I understand about composting, this mix just ain’t good. ;)

The bins are made of wood and chicken wire. They’re about 5′ wide x 5′ deep x 5′ tall each with boards nailed all around the bottom up to 3 feet off the ground…so no getting to the compost easily even if there were some. The chicken wire runs around 3 sides of each bin with the 4th side left open, and they are overflowing with yard waste.

Basically, it just looks like a big mess. Thankfully, there is an absolutely gorgeous wisteria vine covering the entire side of these bins that faces my house, so at least we have a nice view. Can’t say the same for the neighbors, though. :P

So can I do anything to fix these compost piles and end up with some decent compost to put on my garden next year? I know it needs aeration, but I can’t see how I will possibly be able to turn it at all with the bins being enclosed at the bottom and filled to my eye level. Any suggestions?

Also, our garden next year (fruits and veggies) will be grown using entirely organic methods and products. If the yard waste in the pile was treated with chemicals while it was still living and growing, will those chemicals be present in the compost??

Maybe I should just have the entire contents of the bins hauled away and start from scratch. :P

Any suggestions, information, and advice is welcome and very appreciated! Thanks in advance. :)
Amy

Resolved Question: if planning on replanting lawn…is it necessary to kill the grass if will be tilling area up?

Monday, September 6th, 2010

How is it going? I was walking through the mall today and I thought of a good question. Well, here it is. I think you will find it helpful.

also, after tilling ground up..how many weed seeds will still come back up? as i have read that disturbing the gound produces a lot of weeds the next spring..regardless if in the autumn when tilling? is this true?

please explain what you can…also if plan on spreading a 1-2 inch layer of compost over entire area is it best to leave this on top or to till in with clay dirt?

thanks for your answers!
IF USING GLYSOPHATE HERBICIDE HOW LONG SHOULD WAIT AFTER SPRAYING EXISTING GRASS BEFORE TILLING UP AND HOW LONG AFTER THAT BEFORE PLANTING GRASS SEED? IF PLAN ON USING FESCUE? WILL PRE EMERGENT KEEP FESCUE SEEDS FROM GROWING?SHOULD ONE NOT APPLY PRE EMERGENT GRANULES ?
WAS THINKING OF ALSO THROWING OUT PRE EMERGENT GRANULES “TREFLAN” OVER TILLED UP AREA TO PREVENT WEEDS,,BUT WILL THIS PREVENT GRASS TOO? HOW CAN PREVENT A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF WEEDS NEXT SPRING? WHAT ARE SOME SECRET TIPS MAYBE?

THANKS AGAIN

Resolved Question: Old farming techniques?

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Howdy! Here is a good question. I hope this will help you with your daily composting!

What are ways that Americans farmed in the 1600’s though 1800’s before we had tractors and stuff like that?

What are some techniques they used for things like making compost, planting large fields, etc?

Are there any good books or videos about old farming techniques?

Resolved Question: If something died in my crawlspace, could damp make it last months & showering or flushing worsen the smell?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Howdy! Here is a good question. I hope this will help you with your daily composting!

My basement stinks like something organic rotting and it wafts upstairs, and I can’t run the A/C anymore because it uses basement air and makes the house smell like a compost bin. At first I ruled out something dead because it lasted all summer and started in spring, and, although it pretty much always smells, it gets worse every time anyone showers or flushes, so I was convinced it was sewer gas. But yesterday on a hike I finally smelled sewer gas coming from some pipe, and it’s pretty different from this smell. Could something dead take months to rot, and smell worse when water leaks into the crawlspace area or foundation somehow when I flush or shower? Also! Would something dead in the crawlspace smell kind of different from roadkill rotting in the hot sun? Because I have had to smell roadkill plenty of times and this, though offensive, is not nearly as bad as roadkill in the sun is.

Voting Question: Why are many people pushing composting?

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Hello! We have found another question for you to ponder.

A lot of horticulturists warn against adding more than 5% organic matter to soil. Most soil already has sufficient organic matter, and would benfit more from non orangic amendments like sand, pumice. What are people supposed to do with all of this compost?

Monday, August 30th, 2010

I usually grow in soil/compost but this year i have started using coco coir using nutrients etc. I have been feeding them 5.5 pH water and it seems the leaves are looking dry and going pale.

Does anyone know the perfect pH for growing Naga’s!
